Originally introduced to North America to control and bring down the aphid population, the Asian beetle is now a prominent pest in the Midwest due to the high presence of soybean aphids. Asian beetles are coccinellid beetles with head to wing coverings and a dome-shaped body. The most common color combinations for this pest are reddish orange with black spots or black with 2-4 red spots and they can range up to 3/8 in. (9 mm) in size. These insects invade homes in large groups during the fall and winter months for protection and their bites are known to cause irritation or allergic reactions in humans.
Asian beetles are known for the pungent odor and yellow body fluid that is released when squished or scared. They enjoy hiding in cool, dark spaces and remain dormant during the winter season.
