Boxelder bugs enjoy the warm weather and sunning themselves, so they choose to find areas in and around your home such as plants, trees, shrubs, and rocks to eat and absorb warmth. Due to not enjoying the cold, these pests try to invade your home in search of warm areas during winter. Your home’s heater will often trick them into thinking it is spring and will cause them to wake up from their dormant state to search for food.
Boxelder bugs have long black bodies with red marks and can grow to be up to 1/2 in. (13 mm). They are not poisonous and do not cause any negative health effects on humans, although their bites imitate that of a mosquito and can have slight itching and irritation.
